What to Pack for Egypt (And What You’ll Wish You Brought)

Packing for Egypt can feel a little overwhelming. You’ve got desert heat, ancient sites, cultural considerations, and the occasional early morning start all rolled into one unforgettable trip.

The good news! You don’t need to overpack. You just need to pack smart.

Here’s everything you should bring—plus a few things you’ll be very glad you didn’t leave behind.

☀️ Light, Breathable Clothing (Your Best Friend)

Egypt is warm for most of the year, so think lightweight, loose-fitting fabrics like cotton and linen.

For both comfort and cultural respect, we recommend:

  • T-shirts, blouses, and long-sleeve tops

  • Lightweight trousers, maxi skirts, or dresses

  • A light scarf or shawl (especially for women when visiting mosques or more traditional areas)

You don’t need to dress overly conservative, but modest and comfortable is always a safe and respectful choice.

👟 Comfortable Walking Shoes (Non-Negotiable)

This is one item you don’t want to get wrong.

From exploring the Pyramids of Giza to walking through temples in Luxor, you’ll be on your feet more than you expect.

Closed-toe shoes with good support are ideal. Sandals are fine for evenings, but for sightseeing, your feet will thank you for proper walking shoes.

🧢 Sun Protection Essentials

The Egyptian sun doesn’t hold back, especially in open areas like the desert or temple sites.

Make sure you pack:

  • A wide-brim hat or cap

  • Sunglasses

  • High SPF sunscreen

You’ll use these every single day.

💧 Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is key. While bottled water is easily accessible on the street and is always provided during tours, having your own reusable bottle is incredibly convenient—especially on longer days and will keep your water cooler than the plastic bottles.

🔌 Travel Adapter & Power Bank

Egypt uses European-style plugs (types C and F), so a travel adapter is essential.

A power bank is also a great idea—you’ll be taking a lot of photos, and long days out mean your phone battery can drain quickly.

💊 Basic Medications & Personal Essentials

Pharmacies are widely available across Egypt and are often well-stocked with very reasonable prices, so if you forget something, it’s usually easy to pick up what you need.

That said, we always recommend bringing any prescribed medications with you, along with anything specific you prefer or regularly use.

Consider packing:

  • Hand sanitizer and tissues

  • Any personal prescriptions

You can travel a little lighter knowing you’re well covered if needed

🧥 Layers for Cooler Evenings (Especially in Winter)

This is one of the most commonly underestimated parts of packing for Egypt.

During the winter months (roughly November to February), days are usually mild and sunny, but mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cold—especially in desert areas and on Nile cruises.

We recommend packing:

  • A warm jacket or coat

  • A light sweater or hoodie for layering

  • A scarf for extra warmth

If you’re heading out early (think sunrise starts) or spending time outdoors at night, you’ll be very glad you brought something warmer.

During the summer months (May to September), temperatures stay much warmer overall, so a single light sweater or layer is usually more than enough for cooler indoor spaces or the occasional breezy evening

🏜️ Overnight Desert Trips (Don’t Underestimate the Cold)

If you’re planning an overnight experience in places like the White Desert National Park or the Black Desert, it’s important to pack a little differently.

While the days can be warm and sunny, desert temperatures drop quickly after sunset—often feeling much colder than cities like Cairo or Luxor.

For desert nights, we strongly recommend:

  • A warm jacket or insulated coat

  • Extra layers (long sleeves, thermal tops if travelling in winter)

  • Comfortable closed shoes and warm socks

It’s one of those experiences where you’ll be sitting under the stars thinking, “I’m so glad I brought this.”

🚿 Swimwear

Whether you’re staying in hotels, cruising the Nile, or visiting the Red Sea, you’ll likely have access to pools.

Swimwear is one of those easy-to-forget items that you’ll definitely want.

The “You’ll Thank Yourself Later” List

These are the small things that can make a big difference:

  • Wet wipes or tissues – Not all public restrooms are stocked

  • Lip balm – The dry climate can catch you off guard

  • Small backpack or day bag – Perfect for daily essentials

  • Cash in small notes – Helpful for tips and small purchases

What You Don’t Need to Worry About

A common concern is overpacking “just in case.”

In reality:

  • Everyday items are easy to find in Egypt

  • Laundry services are widely available in hotels and on Nile cruises

  • Your tours will typically include water, transport, and support throughout the day

Final Thoughts

Packing for Egypt isn’t about bringing more—it’s about bringing the right things.

With a few thoughtful choices, you’ll be comfortable, prepared, and free to fully enjoy everything Egypt has to offer—from ancient wonders to everyday moments that end up being the most memorable.

And if you forget something? Don’t worry—you’re not the first, and you won’t be the last. We’ve got you covered.
